Tigers Unable To Hold Early Lead Against Adrian

Springfield, Ohio – The Wittenberg men's soccer team opened up the 2018 season, hosting the Bulldogs of Adrian College. The Tigers jumped out to an early lead over Adrian, drawing a penalty shot goal within the first five minutes of action. Adrian would not be kept off the board for long as the Bulldogs would find the back of the net just past the tenth minute of play. The tensions rose with the temperature at Edwards-Maurer field with three cards on display in the first half. The Adrian keeper was on the receiving end of a yellow card, while the Tiger's took a yellow and a red before the first 45 minutes were up. The two teams kept the physical play on the forefront through the second half, after 14 fouls were issued in the first half. Wittenberg was able to find their offensive stride, taking 7 shots placing 5 on goal in the second half. The Wittenberg defense was able to fend off the Adrian attack for over 80 minutes of action before the Bulldogs were able to take the lead 2-1 with just over five minutes left in the game.

GAME BREAKDOWN

  • Senior keeper Jack Snider kept the Bulldogs at bay with eight saves against nine shots in the first half.
  • Alberto Zaragoza scored the opening goal for Wittenberg on the penalty shot, piercing the back-netting of the Adrian goal.  Zaragoza led the offensive attack with three shots and three shots on frame.
  • Snider stayed busy in the second half, facing six Bulldog shots on goal taking his save total to 12 on the evening.
  • Austin Lewis and Will Stephens each had a shot placed on the frame for the Tigers on the night.
