Tigers Drop Decision To Earlham In Home Stretch

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Entering the home stretch of the 2009 regular season, the Wittenberg men's soccer team lost a Wednesday night home matchup with Earlham by a 2-1 score. The loss drops the Tigers to 3-10-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

The Tigers have three games remaining in the 2009 campaign, including a homecoming night game this Saturday, Oct. 24, hosting Denison at 7 p.m.

Junior midfielder Nate Ayres (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) provided the Tigers with their lone goal, with an assist from junior forward Tom Fisher (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield).

The Tigers leveled nine shots in the contest, eclipsed by Earlham's 13, but held a 5-2 overall advantage in corner kicks.

Earlham struck first, scoring exactly four minutes into the match before Wittenberg evened the score with Ayres' goal in the 16th minute. The game rested scoreless for another 22 minutes before Earlham produced the final margin with seven minutes to go in the first period. The second period started and finished with no scoring, despite seven shots from both teams.
