MEADVILLE, PA - For the second time already in the 2024 season, Wittenberg Field Hockey hit the road for a pair of weekend games. And for the second time already in the 2024 season, the Tigers were equal to the task, this time following up a 2-1 win at Washington & Jefferson with a dominating 3-0 victory at Allegheny.
The win was Wittenberg's fifth in a row to start the campaign, the team's first under the direction of Head Coach Brighid Kortyna. The Tigers have also had two games cancelled due to campus security threats related to recent political discourse. It is the best start for the program since 2002.
Against Allegheny, which is now 2-8 on the season, Wittenberg had the upper hand from the outset. The Tigers were especially dominant in the second quarter as they piled up a 13-1 shot advantage and scored two of their three goals. The first tally came off the stick of Katie Webber (Columbus, OH / Upper Arlington), thanks in part to an assist by Maddy Krasnow (Bexley, OH / Bexley) in the 20th minute. Just before halftime, the Tigers doubled their advantage on an unassisted goal by Claire Frient (Dublin, OH / Coffman).
The Tigers, who improved to 2-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) with the win, put the game out of reach in the third quarter as Lucy Ripepi (Lakewood, OH / Magnificat) scored off an assist from Jamie Triolo (Haskell, NJ / Lakeland Regional) in the 38th minute.
For the game, Wittenberg held a commanding 26-7 advantage in shots and a 16-6 edge in penalty corners. Gators' goalkeeper Rowan O'Toole was credited with eight saves, while Wittenberg's tandem in goal of Caitlin Archdeacon (Saratoga, CA / Westmont) and Izzy Thompson (New Albany, OH / New Albany) combined for four saves.
Ripepi led Wittenberg with seven shots, Devyn Groves (La Grange, KY / Oldham County Senior) added four shots, and Krasnow chipped in with three shots.
The Tigers will return to action on Saturday, October 5, back home at Edwards-Maurer Field. The game will start at 11 a.m., and it will serve as the team's Senior Recognition Day.
