Washington, PA.- Wittenberg field hockey continued its strong play as the Tigers secured a 2-1 victory over conference foe Washington & Jefferson. With the win, Witt keeps its spotless record improving to 4-0 and 1-0 in the NCAC, while Washington & Jefferson drops to 1-6 on the season and 1-2 in conference play.
The Tigers and Presidents were knotted at zero heading into the break, however, a third and fourth quarter surge helped Witt earn the victory. Nine minutes into the third quarter Devyn Groves (La Grange Ky./Oldham County Senior) was able to find the back of the net to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage.
Less than ten minutes later, early in the fourth quarter, Groves continued her offensive attack, as she scored her second goal of the morning off an assist from Lucy Ripepi (Lakewood, Oh/Magnificat). Groves has tallied a team-high six goals on the season. Washington and Jefferson went on to score late in the fourth period; however, its rally was not enough as the Tigers secured the 2-1 win.
Wittenberg was dominant offensively throughout the match as the Tigers outshot the Presidents 21-6, however both teams earned seven penalty corners.
Wittenberg continues its Pennsylvania road trip as the Tigers travel to Allegheny, on Sunday, September 29, to square off with the Gators in another conference match-up slated for noon.
