Tigers Claim Season Opener Behind Groves’ Hat Trick

Rochester, NY- Wittenberg traveled to Rochester to take on Nazareth University to open their 2023 season, after finishing last season 10-8.

After the first quarter, the score was all knotted at zero, but with four minutes to go in the second quarter, Emily Owens opened up the scoring to give Wittenberg the 1-0 lead at halftime. The Tigers came out on fire in the second half, netting three goals in less than eight minutes by Devyn Groves, Katie Webber and Meike Kwaaitaal, her first collegiate goal.

In the fourth quarter, Groves scored twice more to complete her hat trick and end the game with a 6-1 victory.

Notables: The Tigers outshot the Golden Flyers 30-4 on the game. They also had 13 penalty corners to Nazareth's 1. Wittenberg rotated all three of their goalkeepers in net, securing the win.

Leaders: The Tigers were led offensively by Groves with three goals, all of which came in the second half. Defensively, Caitlin Archdeacon played the majority of the contest in goal, allowing one goal on only 4 shots.
