Tigers Take Down Allegheny In OT Thriller

Meadville, PA – The Wittenberg Tiger Field Hockey team closed out their season with an exciting 2-1 win road win over Allegheny College. The two sides battled through two-quarters of scoreless action, Allegheny tallied eight shots through the first half with Wittenberg earning just one penalty corner opportunity.

Wittenberg was able to strike first, with Lucy Ripepi capitalizing off the Regan Mazzulli assist in the 44th minute of the action, giving the Tigers the 1-0 advantage. Allegheny tallied the equalizer in the 48th minute, as the Tiger defense continued to hold strong throughout the remainder, with the Gators earning seven penalty corner opportunities in the final quarter of regulation.

In the overtime period, the senior duo of Meredith Johnson finding Mazzulli on the pass and score off the penalty corner opportunity, gave Wittenberg the walk-off win.

NCAC Leaders: Katie Webber cracks the top ten for goals in the NCAC at number eight with six on the season. Regan Mazzulli sits at number six in the NCAC for assists with five on the year. Lastly for Wittenberg, Caitlin Archdeacon sits at number two for save percentage in the conference with .862 and number four for saves with 50 on the season.

In goal, Emma Hurguy made nine saves against 10 shots on goal for Wittenberg. Hurguy picked up her second win of the season for the Tigers.

With this win, Wittenberg ends their season at 8-8 overall and 4-4 in the NCAC. The Tigers finish in a three-way tie for fourth-place with the NCAC Tournament bid going to Allegheny off the tiebreaker scenario. For the senior class of Caroline Cairns, Caroline Ford, Emma Hurguy, Meredith Johnson and Regan Mazzulli they hold an overall record of 25-25 record and 12-12 record in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Off the field the Seniors have been a part of a team that has won the NFHCA National Academic Team Award each year.
