Tiger Field Hockey Secures 9-0 Shutout Against Meredith

Springfield, OH- The Tigers took the field against the Avenging Angels of Meredith College inside the confines of Edwards Mauer Field, coming away with a 9-0 win.

The Angels fell after a record-breaking Tigers offensive onslaught, led by Sophomore forward Katie Webber, scoring the unofficial quickest hat trick in Wittenberg field hockey history. Webber found the back of the cage three times within the first 5:02 of action. The Tigers showed a different level of aggression compared to the last two games, with Wittenberg dominating the time of possession, reflecting in the first half with five first-half corners compared to none for the Avenging Angels. Other first half goals came from Senior's Meredith Johnson and Regan Mazzulli.  

Coming out in the second half, Meredith College came out as the aggressor, but the Tigers defense held strong, allowing no goals the entire game. The aggressive mindset continued to payoff, providing more penalty corners and and scoring opportunities for the Tiger offense. Wittenberg saw goals come from senior Caroline Cairns and freshmen Morgan Meyers, along with a late score from Mazzulli, and a tip-in from Johnson. Mazzulli and Johnson both would come away with two goals on evening, as Mazzulli currently has two goals and two assists on the season. Johnson has three goals and one assist through the early going.

Caitlin Archdeacon and Emma Hurguy combined with for their first shutout of the season.

Wittenberg will be back in action on Wednesday, September 14, traveling to DePauw for a non-conference showdown with the fellow Tigers of the NCAC. Opening whistle from Greencastle, Ind. is set for 5:00 pm.
