SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers put the finishing touches on the home portion of the 2015 season with a 4-1 win on Senior Recognition Day at Edwards-Maurer Field.
The win was crucial for the Tigers' hopes of advancing to the four-team North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament. Wittenberg is tied for fourth place with Ohio Wesleyan at 6-6 with two games remaining in the regular season, starting with a road trip to Delaware for a game against the Battling Bishops at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28.
Overall, Wittenberg is 6-10 on the season, while Oberlin dropped to 1-15. The Yeowomen are 0-12 in the NCAC.
Wittenberg opened the scoring in the 18th minute as freshman Blaine Donnelly (Hanover, Md./Archbishop Spalding) scored off a feed from senior Paige Vanerstrom (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny). Vanerstrom made it 2-0 at the 29-minute mark, as she finished successfully after a pass from sophomore Maddie Goelz (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington).
After Oberlin pulled a goal back 2:17 into the second half, Donnelly gave the Tigers some breathing room with an unassisted tally in the 59th minute. Senior Andrea Mattingly (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) fittingly capped the scoring off a feed from senior Emma Foster (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke).
Vanerstrom, Mattingly and Foster were honored prior to the game in a brief ceremony that included their parents.
