WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Wittenberg field hockey team got a brand new season underway in the first official Tiger athletic contest of the new school year, but ran into a tough Washington & Jefferson squad to drop the matchup 4-0 on Thursday night.
For the second straight year, the Tigers and Presidents met in a low-scoring affair following a narrow 2-1 Wittenberg victory in 2010.
Tiger senior goalkeeper Jenny Schaafsma (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) stopped seven shots throughout the contest against just four goals allowed.
Through one half, the Tigers kept Washington & Jefferson in check with just one goal. In the second half, the Presidents scored three goals.
Wittenberg held a 9-6 advantage in penalty corners, including a 6-2 mark in the second half.
The Tigers open North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday with an 11 a.m. contest at Denison.
