Springfield, OH – The Wittenberg baseball team split a doubleheader against visiting Wabash in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play at Carleton Davidson Stadium. Wittenberg rallied for a 12-11 win in the opener, but Wabash held off the Tigers in the nightcap for a 7-5 victory.
The Tigers will be back in action at home on Friday, April 18, against Hiram in a doubleheader with first pitch at 1:00 p.m. These games were previously scheduled for Saturday, April 19, but weather concerns forced the change. Senior Recognition Day has been rescheduled as well - the program will celebrate its graduating student-athletes prior to the Ohio Wesleyan doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, April 26.
In game one, the Tigers scored two in the first, two in the third, one in the sixth, and two more in both the seventh and eighth innings. Wabash kept the game close scoring three in the first and second, one in the fifth and four in the seventh. Witt tallied 12 runs on 18 hits and committed three errors. Wabash registered 11 runs on 13 hits and committed three errors.
Sophomore Thatcher Dietz (Westerville, OH / South) led the Tigers at the plate with two hits, one RBI, and three runs. Luke Thomas (Tallmadge, OH / Tallmadge) had one of two home runs in the game for an RBI, and he scored two runs and drove in five runs. Rocco Royer (Lake Bluff, IL / Lake Forest) hit the Tigers' other home run in the game as he scored two runs and drew one walk. Both James MacAuley (Grosse Pointe Woods, MI / Grosse Pointe North) and Xander Rodriguez (Salinas, PR / Franklin County) scored a run in the game.
Charlie Schafer (Beavercreek, OH / Beavercreek) picked up his second win of the season by going 2.1 innings and allowing no runs on just two hits while striking out three.
Wittenberg fell in game two while putting up a strong fight. The Tigers scored one run in the second inning and two runs in both the fourth and fifth inning. Wabash started slow, not scoring until the third inning when the Little Giants scored their first two runs. They went on to add three in the fourth and two more in the eighth to claim the win. Witt scored five runs on 15 hits and had three errors. Wabash tallied seven runs on 15 hits.
Parker Gryskevich (Brownsburg, IN / Brownsburg) was the heavy hitter for Wittenberg, going 3-for-5 with one RBI on a home run. Dietz, who was 2-for-4 at the plate, also hit a home run and scored two runs. Alex Nemunaitis (Perrysburg, OH / Ottawa Hills) went 2-for-4 with an RBI on another home run. MacAuley went 1-for-3 and scored one run.
Wittenberg had seven pitchers take the mound across the nine innings, totaling three strikeouts, 15 hits, seven runs (six earned), and seven walks.
