O'Malley, Rust lead Baseball to 5-1 win over Capital

SPRINGFIELD — The Wittenberg baseball team won its sixth straight game on Monday, defeating Capital 5-1 in non-conference play.

The Basics

Stat Leaders

  • Senior Conor O'Malley (Avon, Ohio/St. Edward's) was 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and one run scored.
  • Senior Matt Moore (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) tallied two hits and one RBI.
  • Sophomore James MacAuley (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) posted one hit and one RBI.
  • Senior Luke Thomas (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) and junior Ben Seibert (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) recorded one hit and one run each. Thomas' hit was a double.
  • Sophomore Andrew Rust (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) got the start on the mound for the Tigers and earned the win to improve to 3-3 on the season. He allowed one unearned run on four hits and two walks while striking out two over 5.1 innings.
  • Junior Kyle Mahon (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville), freshmen Tommy Anthony (Toronto, Ontario/Humberside Collegiate Institute) and Gavin Lones (Lakeview, Ohio/Indian Lake) and senior Joe Horoszko (Seven Hills, Ohio/St. Edward's) combined to pitch 3.2 scoreless innings in relief of Rust, allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out six. Horoszko recorded the final out of the game and earned his first save of the season.
  • Kielan Lamarr led the Capital offense with two hits.

The Game

  • The Tigers opened the scoring with a two-run second inning. Moore hit a one-out RBI single, and MacAuley added a two-out RBI single.
  • The Comets cut the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the third inning with an RBI double.
  • Wittenberg answered in the bottom of the third with a two-run homer to right-center field from O'Malley. That marked his fifth home run of the season, which is tied for second on the team.
  • The Tigers increased their lead to 5-1 when Seibert scored on a Comet error in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Wittenberg out-hit Capital by a 9-5 margin, and each team committed one error.

  • Thomas has 126 hits and 30 doubles in his career. He is 40 hits and six doubles shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories.
