Nemunaitis, Moore hit home runs to lead Baseball to 12-2 win over Wilmington

SPRINGFIELD — Sophomore Alex Nemunaitis (Ottawa Hills, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) and senior Matt Moore (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) both hit home runs to lead the Wittenberg baseball team to a 12-2 win over Wilmington in a non-conference game on Sunday. The game ended in seven innings via the mercy rule.

  • In his first collegiate start, sophomore Mikey Eickhoff (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) earned the win on the mound to improve to 3-2 on the season. He allowed just one run on two hits and two walks while striking out three over five innings.
  • Sophomore Andrew Rust (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman), senior Justin Kreller (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) and junior Kyle Mahon (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville) pitched in relief of Eickhoff.

The Game

  • Wilmington opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning, but Wittenberg responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame. The Tigers scored via a lodged ball advancement, RBI single from freshman Xander Rodriguez (Salinas, P.R./Franklin County) and Quaker error.
  • An RBI groundout from senior Conor O'Malley (Avon, Ohio/St. Edward's) increased the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the second inning.
  • The Tigers plated six more runs in the fourth inning. MacAuley hit a leadoff single and came home on a double from Thomas. Nemunaitis followed with a two-run homer to left field, and Moore added a one-out three-run homer later in the frame for a 10-1 edge.
  • Wittenberg added a run in the fifth courtesy of a Quaker error.
  • The Quakers scored their second run of the game on an RBI single in the top of the seventh, making the score 11-2.
  • Looking to end the game via the mercy rule, the Tigers loaded the bases with one out via a single from sophomore Ashton Newton (Lodi, Ohio/Cloverleaf) sandwiched between a pair of hit-by-pitches. After Wilmington recorded the second out via a fielder's choice play at home plate, Wittenberg got the run it needed to end the game via an RBI single from sophomore George Janzen (West Chester, Ohio/Roger Bacon).
  • Wittenberg out-hit Wilmington by a 14-6 margin and committed no errors to the Quakers' four.

  • O'Malley has 133 hits, 30 doubles, 15 home runs and 109 RBIs in his career. He is tied for sixth all-time at Wittenberg in home runs and tied for ninth all-time in RBIs and is 33 hits and six doubles shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories.
  • Thomas has 121 hits and 29 doubles in his career. He is 45 hits and seven doubles shy of breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in those categories.
  • Nemunaitis and Rodriguez are tied for the team lead in home runs this season with five each. Rodriguez has a team-leading 28 RBIs.
