Wittenberg Baseball Splits Series With DePauw

Springfield, OH – The Wittenberg Tiger baseball team split a pair of one-run games with the Tigers from DePauw University on Tuesday evening. Wittenberg took game one of the series by way of a walk-off win, 11-10, coming from the bat of Parker Gryskevic. Wittenberg fell in game two by a final score of 4-3. Wittenberg moves to 19-7 overall and 7-3 in NCAC action.

Wittenberg took advantage of DePauw's defensive miscues as the visiting Tigers accumulated 10 errors to start the series. Jack Siefert and Conor O'Malley were the only Tigers to tally multiple hits in game one against DePauw. Siefert added an RBI with a run scored. O'Malley tallied two RBI, including a solo home run in the fourth, with three runs scored. Wittenberg got on the board first, plating three runs in the bottom of the second inning. After scoring their first run off the Ben Seibert fielder's choice, Wittenberg took advantage of the first DePauw errors of the day. Seibert and Austin Morrow would come around to score off the DePauw wild pitch and errant fielding attempt by the defense, before the end of the inning. DePauw stole two runs back in the top of the third, leaving Wittenberg with a one run advantage. The home side added two in the bottom half of the third with an RBI groundout from Dylan Jackson. Seibert added to the Wittenberg lead, executing the sacrifice bunt to plate O'Malley. Wittenberg added three more to their lead in the fourth, capped off by the solo shot from O'Malley. DePauw would fight their way back into the game playing four runs in the fifth to make it an 8-6 ballgame.

Wittenberg got 4.1 innings from Joe Horoszko to start game one against DePauw. Horoszko allowed seven hits and five runs with four strikeouts against 20 batters faced. Charlie Schafer put in 3.2 innings, allowing one hit and fanning one DePauw hitter. Justin Maynard would come in to earn his seventh win of the season, with one inning on the mound to close out the ninth.

In game two the Wittenberg offense would come alive late as DePauw would hold the home side scoreless for seven innings. With four hits in the final game to the visitors eight, Wittenberg fell 4-3. A double into right center from Chase Whisner put Wittenberg on the board in game two, making it a 4-1 game. O'Malley drew the bases loaded walk to plate the second Wittenberg run of the eighth inning. Gryskevic would come home to score in ninth, scoring on the DePauw error.

Michael Osmond put in 5.2 innings of work on the hill to start the game for Wittenberg. Osmond would allow seven hits with four strikeouts against 30 batters. Nick Cunningham closed out the game on the hill, allowing one hit with three strikeouts and no runs allowed.

Wittenberg will return to action on Saturday, April 23 traveling to Kenyon College. First pitch against the Lords is set for 12:00 pm.
