Tigers Open 2022 Season With Sweep Of John Carroll

Xenia, OH – The Wittenberg Tiger baseball team opened the 2022 season with a pair of wins, taking down the Blue Streaks of John Carroll University. The Tigers took game one with a walk-off win in the bottom of the 9th inning, with Gabe Stacy lining a double down the line in left, scoring two Tiger runs and taking the game, 7-6. The Tigers displayed dominant pitching performance by Austin Luther, hurling six innings of scoreless ball for Wittenberg, earning his first win of the 2022 season on the mound. The Tiger offense stayed hot behind the steady pitching performance, cruising to a 7-3 win over the Blue Streaks.

Stacy would complete his day going 6 of 8 from the place, smacking three doubles, adding a triple and a home run to get the season started. The Wittenberg backstop, Matt Moore added three hits in game one for the Tiger offense, driving in a run. Chase Whisner put up a pair of hits to get the day started, including a triple and would come around to score in the 8th inning to help cut into the JCU lead.

Justin Maynard shut down the Blue Streak offense through the final three innings of game one, allowing just two hits and giving up one run, while striking out four hitters. Maynard faced 12 batters on his way to securing the win for the Tigers.

The Tiger offense went off amassing 15 hits in game two against the Blue Streaks. Five Tigers tallied multiple hits to wrap up the series, including Stacy (2-3) , Luke Thomas (2-4), Whisner (2-3), Connor O'Malley (3-5) and Austin Morrow (4-5). Whisner would make his way around to score three runs for the Wittenberg offense, with O'Malley driving in a team-high three runs.

UP NEXT

Wittenberg will get set to head out on the annual Spring Break trip March 7-11. Heading to Port Charlotte, Florida the Tigers will take on opponents which include; Misericordia, Lebanon Valley, Mitchell, and Swarthmore. Wittenberg will return from break and head to Earlham College on Wednesday, March 16 for a nine-inning game at 7:00 PM.
