Tiger Baseball Closes Out 2021 Season

Springfield, OH – The Wittenberg University baseball team wrapped up their 2021 season, hosting the College of Wooster Fighting Scots. Wooster took game one in the back-and-forth battle 11-6 before the skies opened up over Carleton-Davidson Stadium washing out game two and the final regular-season game of the season. The Tigers closed out the season with an overall record of 21-11 and 9-6 in NCAC West action, coming up with a second-place finish in the NCAC West. This was Tiger's first 20-win season since Wittenberg went 23-16 (9-10) in 2013. The Tigers jumped out to a hot start on the season, beating NCAA Division I Akron 5-1 on the road in the season opener. Wittenberg carried the momentum into an eight-game win streak, taking down Olivet College, Alma College, Hiram College, and NCAA Division II Cedarville University along the way. The Tigers faced the Spartans of Case Western Reserve for a six-game set, taking 3 of 4 games from Carleton Davidson Stadium, before suffering their first back-to-back losses on the road to the Spartans in the final two games. Wittenberg opened up NCAC action hosting Ohio Wesleyan, sweeping the Battling Bishops in a four-game series for the first time in program history.

A handful of Tiger individuals collected All-NCAC Athlete of the Week honors along the way, including Tanner Griggs, Joe Horoszko, and Jack Hollinshead.  Highlighted by senior Hollinshead earning multiple D3baseball.com Team of the Week honors and NCBWA D3 Hitter of the Week accolades.

Game Breakdown

Wooster opened the scoring in the first inning of game one, putting up four runs to take the early lead. Jack Siefert put the Tigers on the board in the bottom half of the inning, ripping a double to left-center, plating Patrick Kenny. The Tigers put together a five-run third inning, taking a 6-5 advantage over the Scots. Tanner Boros kickstarted the Tiger scoring, forcing the Wooster error, as Kenny came in to score for a second time. A two-RBI single to left-center by Mason Davis brought around Siefert and Hollinshead to knot things up at 5-5. Wittenberg took the lead off a Connor Goss single to left, plating Davis for the sixth run.

Tanner Griggs got the start for the Tigers, tossing three innings, with seven hits allowed and three strikeouts.
