Tigers Split Opening Series With Big Red

Springfield, OH – The Wittenberg University baseball team split the opening doubleheader series with the Big Red of Denison University on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers took game one with a walk off, 8-7 win in the seventh inning. Mason Davis stepped in with the bases loaded and laced a shot down the right field line, scoring Austin Morrow and Tanner Boros. An error by the Big Red allowed Ryan Probst to go from first to home in an instant, taking the 8-7. Jack Siefert and Chase Whisner helped propel the Tiger offense in game one, each finishing 3 of 4 from the dish, with a double and a home run apiece. Wittenberg fell in game two by a final decision of 12-2.

Game Breakdown

Tanner Griggs put in 5.2 innings of work from the mound for the Tigers, getting the start in game one. Griggs fanned four Big Red batters with nine hits allowed against 27 batters faced. Austin Luther earned his second win of his collegiate career, moving to 2-0 on the season. Luther closed out the game with 1.1 innings pitched, striking out two with three hits allowed.

Hollinshead got the scoring started in the first inning, lacing a single through the left side, scoring Gabe Stacy. Patrick Kenny extended the Wittenberg lead to 2-0 in the second inning with an RBI single through the left side. After Denison cut the Wittenberg lead in half, Whisner and Siefert went deep in the fourth and fifth innings, putting the Tigers back ahead 5-2. After Denison regained the advantage through the sixth and seventh inning. The Tigers found one last spark in the bottom of the seventh, with Davis in to pinch hit with the bases loaded.

UP NEXT

The Tigers will travel to Granville to take on the Big Red in the final two games of the series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm. The final two games between the Tigers and Big Red are must-win games for Wittenberg. Should Wittenberg take both games from Denison, the Tigers will look to reschedule the suspended game with Wabash from April 24.
