Wittenberg Sweeps DePauw In Doubleheader Set From The Road

Greencastle, IN – Wittenberg baseball picked up a pivotal North Coast Athletic Conference road sweep on Saturday afternoon, taking two games from the Tigers of DePauw University. Wittenberg edged out DePauw in game one by a final score of 10-9 before moving on to breeze by the host Tigers 11-0 in the final game of the series. Wittenberg collected 26 hits on the afternoon, as Patrick Kenny filled up the stat sheet with five hits in seven at-bats, scoring four runs and driving in three. The duo of Jack Hollinshead and Jack Siefert each contributed multiple hits in both games, as Siefert tallied four RBIs with three doubles. Hollinshead added to his home run total, going deep in game two for his 13th bomb of the season. Hollinshead tacked on a double in game one, finishing the day with eight RBIs for the Red and White. Wittenberg was on the prowl on the basepaths, stealing 10 bases through the two games. Joe Horoszko earned the game one win, posting five innings of seven-hit ball with two strikeouts. Tyler Defibaugh secured the save in game one for the Red and White, getting the final three outs, allowing just two hits. Tanner Griggs picked up his third win of the season, moving to 3-0, tossing five innings of five-hit baseball, and striking out three in the dominant performance in game two.

Game Breakdown

It was a back-and-forth battle in game one for Wittenberg, as the Red and White were the first to strike, putting up two runs in the first inning. A single through the left side by Hollinshead scored Kenny. Siefert followed up with a double to right-center, scoring Hollinshead and giving Wittenberg the 2-0 advantage. DePauw regained the lead in the bottom of the second with a four-run inning. Wittenberg responded with an offensive rally of their own, scoring four runs in each the third and fourth innings. A two-RBI double to right-center from Hollinshead, plated Kenny and Gabe Stacy.  A sacrifice fly executed by Mason Davis put Wittenberg back ahead followed by a Tanner Boros single through the right side, gave the Tigers the 6-4 advantage. Wittenberg came back an inning later, picking up where they left off, starting with a two-RBI single from Kenny. Wittenberg added two more runs to their total in the fourth, before the defensive battle with DePauw begun through the final three innings.

Wittenberg wasted no time getting the scoring started in game two, posting runs in the first, second, fourth, sixth, and seventh innings. With a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning, Hollinshead launched a grand slam to right field, extending the Wittenberg lead to 6-0. Wittenberg piled on three runs in the seventh, securing the shutout win.

Wittenberg will return to action on Thursday, April 22 traveling to Wabash College to start the series with the Little Giants. First pitch from Crawfordsville is set for 2:00 pm.
