Tigers Open NCAC Action With Sweep Of Ohio Wesleyan

Delaware, OH – After picking up their first single-day sweep over the Battling Bishops on Wednesday afternoon, with wins coming at 5-4 and 4-1. Wittenberg University baseball traveled to Delaware to wrap up their series with Ohio Wesleyan, picking up their first four-game sweep in program history over the Battling Bishops. The Tigers took game one from Ohio Wesleyan, 5-2 before securing the sweep with a game two win at 8-1. Wittenberg tallied 15 hits on the afternoon, collecting five in game one, before moving on to record 10 in game two. Jack Hollinshead launched his 11th home run of the season, breaking open the scoring for the Tigers in game one. Mason Davis cranked the long ball in game two for the Tigers, helping get the Wittenberg scoring rally started.

Game Breakdown

It was a defensive battle through the first four innings of action, as neither team was able to push across the first run to break the 0-0 stalemate. Wittenberg sparked a scoring rally in the top of the fifth inning, plating three runs, starting with a two-run Hollinshead home run down the line in left. Patrick Kenny came home for the third Wittenberg run, as OWU couldn't handle the flyball from Jack Siefert. After the Bishops posted their first run in the bottom half of the inning. Wittenberg added to their advantage in the top of the sixth, taking advantage of the Ohio Wesleyan miscue, plating two runs on the Bishops throwing error.

Joe Horoszko took the mound in game one for the Tigers, putting in five innings of work, allowing six hits, and striking out two. Justin Maynard earned his first save of the season, allowing no hits against two batters faced.

Wittenberg wasted no time getting the scoring started in game two, putting up four runs in the first inning. Siefert pushed the first Tiger run across in game two with a single to center field, plating Gabe Stacy. Mason Davis capped off the inning with a three-run homer to right-center. Ohio Wesleyan posted their only runs in the bottom of the second inning before Wittenberg went on to score two in the fourth, one in the sixth, and two in the seventh. A fielding error by the Bishops in the fourth led to two runs for the Tigers. Stacy recorded the sacrifice fly in the sixth, extending the Tiger advantage to 7-1. Tanner Boros singled through the left side, scoring Austin Morrow for the eighth Wittenberg run. Ryan Probst drove home, Parker Thompson, for the final Tiger run.

Matt Shanor tossed three innings to start game two, allowing four hits and striking out two. Austin Luther secured his first collegiate win, striking out three over four innings and allowing just one hit.

Wittenberg will return to action on Wednesday, April 14 hosting DePauw at 12:00 pm for a two-game series from Carleton-Davidson Stadium.
