Tigers Sweep Second Series Against CWRU Spartans

Springfield, OH – Wittenberg baseball continued their electric start to the season, wrapping up the home set of their series with Case Western Reserve, sweeping the Spartans on the day, taking game one 11-1 before securing game two, 11-2. The Tigers collected 23 hits on the day, going for 14 in the first game and adding nine in the second. The Tigers added to their advantage consistently throughout the first game, before exploding for a seven-run seventh inning and securing the sweep on the day. Patrick Kenny sparked the Tiger offense going 4 for 9 at the plate on the day, including a double and a home run in the first game. Rusty Hayhurst picked up his second win of the season, moving to 2-0 after picking up the start in game one for the Red and White. Hayhurst put in 7.2 innings of work with six hits allowed while striking out five. Michael Osmond earned his second win of the season in game two, striking out two with four hits allowed.

Game Breakdown

Wittenberg scored consistently throughout the first game, putting up crooked numbers in the second, fourth, sixth and seventh innings. Dylan Jackson drove in the first Tiger run with a single to left and bringing around Gage Carpenter. Jackson ignited the rally in the fourth inning with another single to left. Ryan Probst drove in two runs, ripping a single the opposite direction into right field. Wittenberg tacked on four more in the sixth as Chase Whisner laced a single into left for two RBI's. A single by Jack Siefert and a miscue by the Spartan defense allowed for two more Tiger runs to cross. With a commanding 9-0 advantage, Kenny sealed the deal with a homer to straightaway center.

The Tigers kept the momentum rolling in the second game, scoring in the first and second inning. Wittenberg held the Spartans scoreless through the first four innings of action. After Case Western was able to plate their first run in the top of the fifth, as the Tigers responded by adding two more to their advantage. The Wittenberg offense exploded in the seventh inning, beginning with Probst executing the sacrifice bunt to score Austin Morrow. Back-to-back base hits from Jack Hollinshead and Siefert helped push the Tiger advantage to 7-2. Luke Thomas drove in the final Wittenberg runs with a single to left, Carpenter and Brayden Woods crossed the plate.

Wittenberg will return to action on Saturday, April 3 traveling to Case Western to wrap up the six-game series with the Spartans. First pitch is set for 12:00 pm.
