Tigers Take Case Western Deep In Series Split

Springfield, OH – The Wittenberg University baseball team returned to Carleton Davidson Stadium on Saturday afternoon, hosting the Spartans of Case Western Reserve. The Tigers dropped game one of the doubleheader slate, 9-5. Wittenberg bounced back in game two, securing the split with a 19-6 win over the Spartans to close out the day. The Tiger offense launched five home runs in game two against the Spartans, as Gage Carpenter tallied his second of the day. Jack Siefert pummeled his third homer of the season off the scoreboard in left field.  Hollinshead added four more home runs on the afternoon, taking the Spartans deep in the bottom of the ninth of game one. He kept the hot bat going in game two, with his second three home run game of the season. Hollinshead now holds a .512/.592/1.220 slash line on the season, leading the Tigers in all offensive categories.

 

Game Breakdown

Wittenberg came out swinging in game two, as Hollinshead sent his second home run over the fence to ignite the Tiger scoring. Matt Moore laced a single up the middle in the second, adding two more to the Tiger total through the early going. The Tigers scored in each of the first four innings of action, putting up five runs in the third and fourth innings, adding four more in the fifth. Wittenberg saw back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning from Hollinshead and Siefert, helping push the Tiger lead out to 11-4 over the Spartans. Carpenter cleared the bases with a grand slam in the fifth, putting the Red and White ahead 17-5. Michael Osmond toed the rubber for the Tigers to start game two, putting in five innings of work, striking out five, and allowing eight hits. Joe Horoszko held down the mound for three innings, striking out five with five hits allowed.

Wittenberg battled the Spartans through game one on the afternoon, as Case Western posted the first run of the day in the top of the second inning. The Tiger offense was sparked in the third inning by Gage Carpenter, hitting his first home run of the season with a two-run homer to center. Case Western tallied three runs in the fifth inning regaining the lead at 4-2. Wittenberg responded in the bottom of the inning, beginning with aggressive base-running and forcing the Spartan error as Carpenter advanced home. Jack Siefert drove in Patrick Kenny on the RBI single to left, bringing the game back to even at 4-4. Hollinshead capped off the Tiger scoring in the bottom of the ninth, smashing his first home run of the day. Tanner Griggs got the start, tossing 4.2 innings with nine hits allowed and striking out two.

Wittenberg will continue their series with Case Western on Friday, April 2 playing the final two home games against the Spartans on Friday, April 2. The doubleheader from Carleton Davidson Stadium is set to begin at 3:00 pm.
