Granville, Ohio – The Wittenberg University baseball traveled to Denison University on Monday afternoon to open up NCAC action, after league action was postponed over the weekend. The Tigers dropped both games of the doubleheader to the Big Red, falling in the first game 10-4, before battling back in game two and going down 7-3. The Tigers collected 15 hits on the day, as Gabe Stacy and Jack Hollinshead logged two hits, along with an RBI apiece in the first game for the Red and White.

Game One Breakdown

The Tigers had to battle back early, as the Big Red jumped out a quick 2-0 lead through the first two innings. Stacy knocked in the first Wittenberg run in the top of the third inning with a single to left, bringing home Parker Thompson. After a three-run rally by the Big Red in the third and fourth innings, Hollinshead smacked a double to left field to bring around Stacy for the second Tiger run of the game in the top half of the sixth inning. Jack Siefert would step in the box to do a job later in the inning, scoring Hayden Knox on the sacrifice fly to left field. Thompson knocked in the final Wittenberg run on a sharply hit ball to the left side of the infield, bringing home Mason Davis for the fourth Tiger run. Four different Tiger pitchers made appearances on the mound, as Tanner Griggs got the start tossing four innings and striking out two. Andrew Juelg gave up two hits in two innings of work with four strikeouts on the day.

Game Two Breakdown

Wittenberg jumped out to the early lead in game two, with some aggressive base running by Knox and Stacy, the Tigers advanced home on the Big Red throwing error. With the 1-0 advantage, Hollinshead put the Tigers up 2-0 with a single back up the middle later in the inning, scoring Knox. The Big Red responded by taking back the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Siefert sent a solo shot over the left field fence to bring the game back to even in the fifth inning, but the Tigers were unable to produce any more runs heading down the stretch. Michael Martin took the bump to start game two, tossing five innings, striking out six and allowing just five hits. Brandon Beegle came on for two and a third innings of work, striking out with two hits allowed.

Wittenberg will return to action on Wednesday, April 3 for two games against NCAC foe Wabash in their return to Carleton Davidson Stadium. First pitch is set for 12:00 PM.
