Wittenberg Baseball's Offense Opens Up Against Wilmington

Springfield, Ohio – The Wittenberg University baseball team took down the Quakers of Wilmington College 14-10 on Monday evening for their third game in two days. The Tiger's collected 18 hits on the day, with four different Wittenberg hitters collect three hits on the afternoon.

 

GAME BREAKDOWN

The Wittenberg offense exploded in the bottom of the third inning, as the Tigers posted five runs on six hits. David Hamrick got things started with a leadoff triple to left center. Hamrick would come across to score on the Gage Carpenter double to left. A perfectly executed Jace Barga bunt forced a Wilmington error, bringing home the second Tiger run. Matt Baker continued his three-game hit-streak, adding a double to left for his first hit of the day. A two-RBI single to left by Ryan Probst brought home Baker and Barga. After a Wilmington pitching change, Patrick Kenny laced a double to left field to score Probst for the fifth Tiger run of the inning. Barga was the first to reach in the fourth inning on a single to right, as a Probst fly out to center would bring in Barga to extend the Tiger lead. The seventh inning saw seven more Wittenberg runs cross the plate on eight hits. Carpenter ripped a single to left to bring around Aaron Fasano, pushing Hamrick to third. After Barga stepped up to rip his second single past the Quaker defense. Baker added to his already productive evening with a two-RBI single into center, bringing home Carpenter and Hamrick. Another Wittenberg RBI double this time coming off the bat of Probst would bring around Baker and Barga for the next two Tiger runs. Before Wilmington could get out of the inning, Andrew Shanor took advantage of his pinch-hit at-bat with an RBI single to left to score Probst. Holding the Quakers scoreless in the sixth. Wittenberg would add their final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth after Carpenter got started with a single back up the middle. Barga tallied his second RBI of the day with a double to center field to bring in the final Wittenberg run.

 

DEFENSIVE NOTES

Rusty Hayhurst took the hill to start the game for the Tigers, earning his first win with five hits allowed and striking out one. Jordan Jolly faced 19 Quaker hitters with four hits allowed and one strikeout. Tanner Boros, Parker Tietz and Michael Martin combined to shut down the Quakers in the ninth.

 

UP NEXT: Wittenberg will return to action on Saturday, March 31 opening up North Coast Athletic Conference action with a doubleheader against Denison set for 12:00 PM.
