Tigers Split with Battling Bishops in NCAC Opener

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio—Wittenberg baseball split with OWU as NCAC play opened up around the league on Saturday. The Tiger's fell 15-5 in game one, but showed great resiliency in game two, bouncing back to drop the battling bishops 6-3, moving to 6-9 overall in 2017.

GAME ONE SCORING BREAKDOWN

Bottom 4th

Bottom 6th

  • Dalton Boucher smashed a double to left field for the Tigers, plating Kaplan.
  • Boucher came around to score for the Tigers after Patrick Kenny stole second base, drawing a wild throw from the Battling Bishops catcher.

Bottom 7th

  • Kaplan recorded a sac-fly for Wittenberg, sending a ball deep out to right-field, plating the Tigers leadoff hitter, Matt Baker.

Bottom 8thth

  • Ryan Probst recorded an RBI for the Wittenberg on a hit to center field, scoring Bates.

GAME TWO SCORING BREAKDOWN

Bottom 1st

  • Adam Mays laced a ball past OWU's shortstop, scoring Timmy Bates as the Tigers took an early 1-0 lead.
  • Boucher was able to come around and score on the next play on an error by OWU's shortstop, as the Tigers led 2-0.
  • Noble Moore got in on the action in the opening frame, doubling to center-field, scoring Mays on the play.

Bottom 5th

  • Bates continued to smoke the ball for Wittenberg, sending a triple deep to right-field, scoring Kaplan and Barga on the play.

Bottom 7th

  • Probst recorded his second RBI of the day, scoring Brad Malott on a base-hit to center-field  as the Tigers led 6-3.

KEY STATS

  • Freshman southpaw Josh Darang came up big for the Tigers on the mound in game two, recording five innings of six hit baseball, as the Arizona native struck out five, allowing three earned runs.
  • Brandon Beegle and Andrew Goodpaster logged the final three innings of work for Wittenberg, surrendering four hits, no runs and one walk in the win.
