Wittenberg Baseball Upends Wilmington 8-2 in Mid-Week Action

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio—Wittenberg baseball returned to action on Tuesday night against the Fighting Quakers of Wilmington College at Carleton Davidson Stadium. The Tigers loaded the bases in both the first and second innings, plating six runs in the two frames in route to an 8-2 win against the OAC opponent. Wittenberg was led offensively by Jace Barga, who picked up three RBI's in the win.

SCORING BREAKDOWN

Bottom 1st

  • With the bases full of Tigers, Wittenberg got on the board first as the Ryan Probst crossed home on a wild pitch from Wilmington's starting pitcher.

Bottom 2nd

  • The Tigers took a 2-0 lead after Probst reached first on an error by the second-basemen, scoring Dalton Boucher, who lead off the inning by scorching a single up the middle.
  • One batter later, senior second basemen Josh Kaplan laced a single to right field scoring starting catcher Patrick Kenny.
  • Brad Malott turned on a pitch, grounding out to the pitcher covering the first base bag, as Matt Baker came across to extend the Tiger lead to 4-0.
  • Putting the finishing touches on the five run second inning was Barga, who turned on an offspeed pitch, sending it deep into the right field corner for a double, picking up two RBI's on the hit in the forms of Kaplan and Probst.

Bottom 4th

  • Barga picked up his third RBI for the Tigers with two outs in the bottom half of the fourth, sending a ball out to left field, scoring  Kaplan, as the Tigers led 7-2.

Bottom 8th

  • With Baker on second base, Probst reached on an error by the first basemen, as Baker came all the way around to score from second, putting the Tigers on top 8-2.

KEY STATS

  • Jonathon Forster earned the win for Wittenberg, logging four innings of four hit baseball, as the junior didn't surrender a walk and struck out one in the mid-week start.
  • Boucher recorded three hits for the Tigers, including a double, as the senior recorded two lead off hits for his team.
