Baseball Sweeps Double-Header Home Opener Against Wilmington

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio—On a beautiful day at Carleton Davidson Stadium, the Wittenberg Tigers baseball team took two games from the Wilmington Quakers, both by the score of 8-3. Both games were highlighted by stellar starting pitching as Jordan Hitt (South Charleston, Ohio/Southeastern) and Luke Black (St. Paris, Ohio/Graham) both earned wins on the day. Hitt went the distance in game one for the Tigers, scattering three runs over nine innings of work, while Black pitched in to the seventh inning for the Tigers in game two, allowing one earned run. Offensively, Wittenerg exploded for 16 runs on the day, courtesy of 20 hits, including six extra-base hits and four stolen bases. The Tigers move to 4-5 on the young season with NCAC play yet to begin.

GAME ONE NOTES

  • From the fourth inning on, Hitt went three-up and three-down for the final 18 outs of the game.
  • Corey Farnbauch (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) tallied three hits and two RBI's in the win, while Will Cousins (Medfield, Massachusetts/ Medfield) and freshman Jace Barga (Versailles, Ohio/Versailles) each added two hits.
  • Farnbauch's fourth inning double capped off a five run inning that put the Tigers in the driver's seat for the remaining of the contest.

GAME TWO NOTES

  • The game was tied at 2-2 until the seventh inning, when Wittenberg managed to produce four quick runs to claim the lead.
  • Barga led off the frame with a double down the right-field line, but it was Cousins who busted things open with a two-RBI triple to deep center scoring Cal Slusarz (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) and Matt Baker (Tuscon, Arizona/Ironwood Ridge).
  • Wittenberg was not adding on, as Slusarz doubled to right-center in the bottom of the eigth inning scoring Baker and Barga, to give Wittenberg an 8-2 lead.

KEY STATS

  • Freshman Brad Malott (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) recorded his first career hit in a Tiger uniform after entering the game in the sixth inning.
  • Jonathon Forster (Royal Oak, Michigan/Brother Rice) finished things up on the mound for the Tigers as the sophomore hurler tossed the final 2.1 innings in relief of Black.
  • The Tiger offense managed a .285 average at the plate Sunday, while stranding 15 runners and striking out four times in 18 innings.

  • Wittenberg travels to Thomas More March 23 for a 4:00PM game, and returns to Springfield the next day against Kenyon at 6:00PM.
