NEW CONCORD, Ohio — The Wittenberg Tigers stranded a season-high 14 runners, including three in the final inning, in a 5-4 loss to host Muskingum.
The loss was Wittenberg's fourth of the season by one run and seventh since March 18 by two runs or less. The Tigers head into a four-game weekend series with Kenyon with an 18-12 overall record.
The Tigers led 1-0 after scoring an unearned run in the third inning, but the Muskies responded with a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh. The Tigers got one run back in the eighth and, after Muskingum had added a pair in the bottom of the eighth, Wittenberg appeared poised for a game-winning rally in the top of the ninth.
After a single from freshman Mike Burgher (Birmingham, Mich./Seaholm) plated two runs, the Tigers re-loaded the bases. Unfortunately, the rally stalled at that point.
Freshman Brandon Reaman (Dayton, Ohio/Northmont), sophomore David Moore (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) and sophomore Tyler Grau (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) each finished with two hits in the game for the Tigers, who collected nine hits and seven walks in the game.
Freshman Stu Haley (Chicago, Ill./New Trier) took the hard-luck loss after allowing just four hits and four walks in 6.1 innings. He allowed two earned runs to the Muskies, who improved to 12-13 on the season.
