Tigers Suffer First Loss Of 2012 Season

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — For the first time in the 2012 season, the Wittenberg baseball team tasted defeat as SUNY Cortland jumped out to a big lead and claimed a 12-2 victory.

The loss dropped Wittenberg to 5-1 on the young season.

SUNY Cortland scored at least one run in each of the first five innings. Freshman starting pitcher Stu Haley (Chicago, Ill./New Trier) was saddled with the loss after giving up eight runs (six earned) in his first start in the Red & White.

By game's end, the Red Dragons had pounded out 17 hits. By contrast, the Tigers were held in check until the bottom of the seventh inning, when they broke through for two runs on RBI singles by senior Matt Hampp (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) and junior Grant Goodwin (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson).

Hampp finished the game 2-for-3, the only Tiger with multiple base hits in the game.
