WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The Wittenberg baseball team closed their spring break trip in Central Florida with a doubleheader split against Anna Maria College, winning 17-2 in the opener and dropping a 5-1 decision in the late game. The Tigers moved to 7-3 overall on the season.
The win extended the Tigers' winning streak to seven games, the best for the program since 2007. Senior center fielder Ray Noe (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) led off and went 3-for-3 at the plate with a triple, a double, one stolen base two RBIs and three runs.
The Tigers got three RBIs from a pair of hitters, senior catcher Jason Haunty (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and sophomore shortstop Grant Goodwin (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson), who went 4-for-5 and 3-for-5, respectively. Haunty also scored a team-best four runs, belted a home run and stole one base, and Goodwin crossed the plate three times with a double.
Sophomore Graham Wolff (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and sophomore Nick Van Dyne (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) each drove two runs across, Wolff on 3-for-4 hitting with a home run and two runs scored. Senior Mike Yednock (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington), junior Matt Hampp (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson), senior Tyler James (Coldwater, Ohio/Coldwater) and freshman David Moore (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) all drove in one run apiece. James doubled once and Hampp notched a pair of doubles.
The pitching staff had a good game, as well, started by senior Zach Spring (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy), who worked 4-2/3 innnings for the win to move to 2-0, allowing seven hits to score two runs while striking out nine batters. Junior Brad Prewitt (Westerville, Ohio/South) closed the game with 2-1/3 innings of scoreless relief on four strikeouts, no walks and just one hit.
The hitting was not as productive in Game 2, as the Tigers were held to four hits, including one each from Van Dyne, Goodwin, Spring and Haunty. Goodwin tallied the team's one RBI against Anna Maria's Brendon Tivnan, who went the distance for the win.
Senior Jim Clement (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) took the loss on 4-2/3 innings, allowing seven hits to score five runs, though he did total six strikeouts. Junior Andy Sharek (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) and senior Sam Clement (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) held Anna Maria scoreless through the remainder, Sharek on one hit and one strikeout in 1-1/3 innings and Clement with one perfect inning.
The Tigers resume their schedule with a 7 p.m. game against NCAA Division I Dayton at the Athletes In Action Baseball Stadium in Xenia, Ohio, on Wednesday, March 16.
