DAYTON, Ohio — The Wittenberg baseball team dropped a 22-4 decision to NCAA Div. I Dayton Wednesday evening, falling to 9-12 overall in the process. The Flyers muscled out 22 hits and scored eight in the first inning and never looked back.
James later provided the only other run of the game for the Tigers in the fifth inning when he smashed a solo home run over the wall in left-center field. James went 1-for-2 with two RBIs while Spring was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Junior designated hitter Mike Yednock (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington)went 2-for-4 with a double and junior left fielder Ray Noe (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome)was also 2-for-4 and added a stolen base.
Other Tigers to collect hits included freshman shortstop Grant Goodwin (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) (1-4) and junior catcher Jason Haunty (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) (1-2).
The Flyers scored eight runs in the bottom of the first, only two of them earned. They added one in the second, two in the third, five in both the fourth and fifth, and one in the sixth. The game ended after six and a half innings.
From the mound, senior Bobby Ciucki (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) took the loss and fell to 2-2. The Tigers' used six pitchers in relief.
Wittenberg returns to Springfield for a 4 p.m. doubleheader tomorrow, Thursday, April 8, with visiting Muskingum.
