Thomas More Ends Tigers' Season With 12-7 Defeat

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. — The Wittenberg baseball team got 14 base hits in their final game of the 2010 season Tuesday evening at Thomas More, but fell five runs short in a 12-7 loss to end the season at 16-20 overall. Thomas More tallied 17 hits to outmuscle the Tigers' three doubles and one triple.

Junior Jason Haunty (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and freshman Graham Wolff (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) both doubled in the game while sophomoreAndy Payton (Springfield, Ohio/North) tagged a double and a triple. Payton finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, the best of several strong offensive performances.

Haunty had two hits in two at-bats, driving in a run and scoring one himself, and freshman Nick Van Dyne (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) drove in three runs on 2-for-5 hitting. Freshman Nate Lavey (Covington, Ohio/Covington) added the remaining RBI in a 1-for-4 day, while scoring twice and stealing one bag.

The Tigers responded to a three-run first inning by Thomas More with three of their own in the second to tie things up, but the Saints piled on six runs in the bottom half to break the game open. The Tigers added one in the third before Thomas More crossed two in the fourth, and Wittenberg pushed across three in the sixth, followed by Thomas More with one in the same frame.

The Tigers threw a total of seven pitchers in the game, senior Darrin Mumaw (Fort Loramie, Ohio/Fort Loramie) soaking up the most time with a strong 2-1/3 innings, allowing only one run on one hit and a walk. Only one other pitcher went more than one inning, and that was junior starter Jim Clement (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young), who took the loss on a six-run, 1-1/3 inning appearance.
