Tigers Pull Out Dramatic Victory Over Urbana In 2010 Home Opener

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — After an unexpected week off, the Wittenberg Tigers returned to the friendly confines of sun-drenched Carleton Davidson Stadium and pulled out a 5-4 victory over visiting Urbana University.

The win pushed the Tigers back over .500 at 4-3 after their last four games in Winter Haven, Fla. were cancelled due to rain. Urbana dropped to 6-8 on the season.

Wittenberg ran nine pitchers to the Carleton Davidson Stadium mound, with each completing exactly one inning. Six of them kept the Blue Knights scoreless, although all nine allowed at least one baserunner. The winner turned out to be senior Darrin Mumaw (Fort Loramie, Ohio/Fort Loramie), who allowed two hits and two runs (one earned) after inheriting a 4-2 lead in the top of the ninth.

In the bottom of the inning, however, junior Stefan Kegler (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) drew a one-out walk, and freshman Zac Daniels (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson), pinch-running for Kegler, advanced to third base on a single by senior A.J. Bush (Troy, Ohio/Troy). He scored on a two-out double by junior Tyler James (Coldwater, Ohio/Coldwater).

James finished with two hits, a run and the game-winning RBI in the game. JuniorRay Noe (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) had the exact same scoreline in the lead-off spot, while freshman Grant Goodwin (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) added a pair of base knocks in three plate appearances as well.

The Tigers return to their home turf against Mount St. Joseph at 6 p.m. Thursday.
