WILMINGTON, Ohio — The Wittenberg baseball team fell to 9-16 overall following a pair of road losses to the Wilmington Quakers Sunday afternoon. The Tigers dropped decisions of 9-3 and 5-4.
In the early game, the 9-3 loss, senior Joel Assenheimer (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) pitched a complete game and gave up only five earned runs but was charged with nine total thanks to two Wittenberg errors behind him. Wilmington led only 1-0 before they posted five runs in the second and two in the fourth, adding one more in the sixth. The Tigers scored one in the fourth and two in the sixth.
Assenheimer struck out six Quakers but gave up 15 hits against Wittenberg's nine. Freshman shortstop Grant Goodwin (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) earned two of the Tigers' base hits, including a home run, in his 2-for-3, one-RBI game. Freshman centerfielder Nick Van Dyne (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) also went 2-for-3, and junior catcher Jason Haunty (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
In the nightcap, a 5-4 loss, junior outfielder Ray Noe (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while junior designated hitter Mike Yednock (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) also went 2-for-4 and scored one run. Goodwin and junior first baseman Zach Spring (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty)each drove in one run in the game.
Sophomore Andy Sharek (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) took the loss giving up four runs on six hits in three-plus innings of work. Freshman Kevin Tolle (Englewood, Ohio/Northmont) threw the last three innings and allowed three hits to score one run while striking out four.
The Tigers next host nearby Cedarville for a Tuesday nine-inning game on April 13 at Carleton-Davidson Stadium, beginning at 7 p.m.
