Wittenberg Rallies For Split With Wabash

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers put together one of their most complete games of the season at the most opportune time, claiming Game 4 of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division series with Wabash at Carleton Davidson Stadium, 9-2. It was crucial that the Tigers put together that victory after losing the opener of Monday's doubleheader 12-1.

The Tigers improved to 11-10 overall and 4-4 in the NCAC West with the four-game split. Wabash leads the division with a 6-2 mark, in addition to its 14-10 overall record.

In the opener, Wittenberg jumped on top for the 15th time in its first 20 games, only to have the Little Giants explode for 12 unanswered runs. Everything the Little Giants hit seemed to find a hole, and the Tigers poured gasoline on the rallies with three untimely errors. Wabash put together three-run rallies in the second, third and sixth innings and also added two runs in the fourth and a single score in the seventh.

Wittenberg starter Steve Less had his worst outing of the season, lasting four innings and allowing 10 hits and five earned runs (eight total). He dropped to 2-3 on the season with the loss. He was followed to the mound by juniors Tyler Jacobs and Tyler McClain, who combined to allow the last four runs in three innings.

The Tigers offense stranded 10 batters in the game as inning after inning was ended with runners in scoring position. Freshman Jon Fox scored the lone run and collected two hits, while senior Jon Komperda went 3-for-4 and junior Brian Hampp drove in the run.

In Game 2, the Tigers turned the ball over to Jason Holmberg and he came up big. After a rough start, a leadoff triple in the first inning earned the Little Giants a 1-0 lead, Holmberg settled in to scatter eight hits and two walks in a complete-game effort. He allowed just two earned runs and stranded eight Wabash runners.

Offensively, the Tigers had their biggest inning since returning from Florida, posting seven runs in a breakout second inning. Junior Justin McCulla led off by getting hit by a pitch (the first of three times he reached that way in the game) and scored the first run of the rally. Then he capped things with a two-run triple. Junior K.R. Schlievert and Hampp each had three hits in the game to pace the offense.
