From Hall of Honor press release dated May 7, 1987:

John Kostyo, a 1941 graduate, was a football phenom at Wittenberg and also played third base for the Tiger baseball team. The Elyria High School grad was chosen Ohio's outstanding grid star of 1940 by the Downtown Coaches of Toledo. As an honorable mention All-America halfback on Wittenberg's undefeated 1940 squad, Kostyo led the state in scoring with 67 points. The team captain and MVP was All-Ohio, all-conference and honorable mention little All-America. He also played in the North-South Annual Blue-Gray Classic in Montgomery, Alabama.

Kostyo was a member of the Eta Chapter of the National Education Honorary Fraternity Kappa Phi Kappa at Wittenberg. He served in the U.S. Army and Ohio National Guard and retired full colonel in April 1976. In May 1976, Kostyo was inducted into the Elyria Hall of Fame.
