Men's Volleyball sweeps Mount Union, improves to 3-0 in MCVL play

SPRINGFIELD — The Wittenberg men's volleyball team swept Mount Union on Friday night in a Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League game, winning the three sets by scores of 25-22, 25-19, 25-20.

The Basics

  • Records: Wittenberg (11-8 overall, 3-0 MCVL), Mount Union (8-8 overall, 2-1 MCVL)
  • Venue: Pam Evans Smith Arena - Springfield, Ohio
  • Wittenberg and Mount Union were two of three teams, joining Baldwin Wallace, that entered Friday tied atop the MCVL standings with matching 2-0 records.

Stat Leaders

  • Sophomore Michael Yurk (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) led the Tigers with 15 kills while hitting .700.
  • Senior Tom Supan (Medina, Ohio/Medina) recorded 10 kills, 10 digs and three blocks.
  • Sophomore Eli Halverson (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin) added eight kills.
  • Senior Andrew Diaz de Padilla (Nipmo, Calif./Central Coast New Tech) posted a team-best 18 assists, and sophomore Sam Richardson (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) added 16 assists.
  • Senior Kurt Klamfoth (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln) tied Supan for the team lead in blocks with three.
  • Jack McClure led the Purple Raiders with 10 kills.

The Game

  • The teams played to a 14-all tie in the opening set before a Wittenberg 5-1 run that included two kills from Yurk and one from Supan put the Tigers up 19-15.
  • The Raiders fought back to within one on a pair of occasions at 20-19 and 22-21, but Wittenberg held on for the 25-22 win capped by a kill from freshman Reese Monnin (Xenia, Ohio/Carroll).
  • The teams opened the second set playing to a 6-all tie, but the Tigers put together a 13-4 run for a 19-10 edge.
  • Mount Union followed with five straight points to get back within four, 19-15, before Wittenberg answered with a 4-0 run that included kills from Supan and Yurk for a 23-15 lead.
  • The Raiders scored the next three points to get within 23-18, but kills from Yurk and Halverson bookended a Mount Union point to give the Tigers the 25-19 win.
  • Mount Union opened up a 13-9 advantage in the third set, but Wittenberg responded with runs of 4-0, 5-0 and 4-0 as part of a larger 13-2 run for a 22-15 lead.
  • The Raiders fought back to within four, 24-20, but Supan secured the set and the match for the Tigers with a kill.
  • Wittenberg hit .286 in the game, recording 40 kills and 16 errors. Mount Union hit .171, recording 24 kills and 11 errors.

  • Third-year head coach Nathan Matthews is now 41-35 all-time at Wittenberg.
  • Diaz de Padilla has 473 assists this season and ranks third in program history with 1,083 career assists. His 610 assists from last season rank seventh in program history for a single season.
  • Yurk has 236 kills this season and ranks seventh in program history with 429 career kills. He currently ranks seventh in program history for single-season kills.
  • Supan has 371 career kills, which ranks 10th all-time at Wittenberg. His 268 career digs rank ninth in program history in that category.
