Change is inevitable in college sports. It is said, however, that tradition never graduates, so the Wittenberg Tigers have their usual set of lofty expectations heading into the 2007-08 season.
Change starts at the top as the program's all-time leading scorer, Sarah Jurewicz, replaces one of her mentors, Pam Smith, as the team's head coach. Smith, the program's head coach for 21 years and the university's associate director of athletics for 15 years, passed away in June after a courageous 17-year battle with cancer.
Jurewicz inherits a program well-positioned for success. The Tigers return 11 letterwinners off a team that finished 15-11 overall and 11-5 in the NCAC a year ago, led by senior post players Katie Gregorevich (Northfield, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) and Ali Rohlfs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame). Gregorevich, a first-team All-NCAC honoree a year ago, led the Tigers in scoring with 11.3 points per game and ranked second in rebounding with 6.4 boards per game in 2006-07. Also a second-team All-NCAC selection after the 2005-06 season, Gregorevich earned NCAC All-Tournament team honors each of the last two years.
Rohlfs also has an impressive resume as she is a three-year starter who averaged 6.5 points and 3.9 rebounds per game during the 2006-07 season. Along with Rohlfs' strong inside presence, she hit the second-most three pointers on the team last year with 19.
While the Tigers' post play is a strong suit again in 2007-08, a nice blend of experience and potential is available in the backcourt as well. Junior point guard Kristin Donawerth (Harrison, Ohio/Harrison) leads the way as she works her way back from an injury suffered midway through last season. She was leading the team in steals and assists per game in the early part of the season.
Sophomore wing Elise Jenkins (Elida, Ohio/Elida), who averaged 2.7 points and 1.7 rebounds per game off the bench a year ago, junior wing Katie Gardner (Newark, Ohio/Catholic) and senior wing Ellie Stonecash (Springboro, Ohio/Middletown Fenwick) are the most experienced players among the other eight returning letterwinners. Other returnees expected to compete for playing time include sophomore posts Stephanie Boardman (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) and Rachel Kohlruss (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville), sophomore wings Carrie Dyer (Copley, Ohio/Copley) and Kellsea Vasileff (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee) and sophomore point guard Victoria Leali (Jackson, Ohio/Jackson).
