Tigers Sweep Day Two Of Spring Break Action

Leesburg, FL – The Wittenberg Tigers softball team swept day two of their Spring Break trip, taking down Saint Joseph's (ME), 6-1, to start the day. The Tigers defeated Marietta College in game two of the day from the Sunshine State, 11-4. The Tigers collected 23 hits on the afternoon between the two games.

GAME ONE

Wittenberg started the day with 13 hits against the Monks from Saint Joseph's College. The Tigers put up crooked numbers in the second, third and sixth innings. Samantha Zungri kept the Monks scoreless for six consecutive innings, after Saint Joseph's plated one run in the bottom of the first inning. Zungri tallied seven strikeouts, allowing seven hits and just one walk, while facing 28 batters. Four Tigers tallied multiple hits to start the day including, Hanna Ecker, Diana Quevedo, Briana Busic and Alexis Christy. Quevedo and Christy each tallied two RBI's for the Tiger offense to get the day started. Christy put the Tigers on the board in the top of the second with a single up the middle scoring Nikki Hawkins. A double to left center by Quevedo capped off a four-run third-inning for the Tigers, as Hawkins and Harper Crews came around to score. Julia Burch pushed across the final Wittenberg runs of game one with a single to center field, with Christy crossing home to put the Tigers ahead 6-1.

GAME TWO

The Tiger offense stayed hot in game two against the Marietta Pioneers, putting up multiple runs in the first, fourth and sixth innings. After the Pioneers put up a run in the top of the first, Wittenberg put together a three-run first led by Clara Andersen reaching on the bunt fielder's choice and scoring Elise Freeland. The Tigers took advantage of the Marietta miscues in the inning, as Burch would come in to score on the Marietta throwing error. A single by Ecker brought around Andersen for the third Tiger run of the inning. The Pioneers would tie things up at 3-3 in the top of the fourth, putting the pressure back on the Wittenberg offense to produce. Wittenberg would regain the lead in the bottom of the fourth, adding three runs to their tally. Christy would get the scoring rally started with a single through the left side, bringing home Hawkins. Freeland drove in two more Tiger runs with a single to center field, adding to the Wittenberg advantage.

Wittenberg will return to action on Wednesday, March 9 where they will take on Northland College and Aurora University from The Spring Games.
