April 29, 2016
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio—The Wittenberg Tigers softball program took two games from NCAC rival Hiram on Friday, 4-2 and 8-0. The double-header sweep puts the Tigers at a 29-6-1 mark in 2016, while completing conference play at a 13-3 overall. Wittenberg's offense exploded for 19 hits, three of which were for extra bases, in the 12 innings played on Friday.
GAME ONE NOTES
- Chelsea Zang (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) mowed through the Terrier offense in game one, as the sophomore went the distance for the Tigers, allowing two runs on five hits in the win.
- On the offensive side of things, freshman catcher Rachel Black (Avon, Indiana/Avon) came up big for the Tigers, plating RBI's on a deep double to centerfield in the fourth inning and again on a clutch single in the sixth innings.
- The Tigers saw seven different batters earn hits in the win, while three different Tigers picked up RBI's in the 4-2 decision.
- Zang needed 119 pitches to down the Terriers, 78 of which were strikes, as the righty hurler faced 31 Hiram batters in the game.
GAME TWO NOTES
- Abby Haab (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) continued to impress as of late as the sophomore moved to 12-2 on the year with a five inning shutout that featured two hits and four strikeouts.
- The story of game two was a six run fourth inning that the Tigers managed to hang up on the Terriers, capped off by a triple by freshman Katy Baumgartner (Fishers, Indiana/Cathedral) that plated both Shannon Lance (Loveland, Ohio/Kings) and Lauren Buelow (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby).
- The Tigers were able to add their eight run in the fifth inning, as Haab took care of the rest in the bottom of the frame, as the Tigers earned the 8-0 mercy rule game.
UP NEXT
- The Tigers conclude their regular season with an out of conference set of games against Heidelberg May 1. First pitch is set for 2:00PM in Tiffin.
