Tiger Softball Moves to 3-1 in NCAC Play with Sweep of Oberlin

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio—Wittenberg Tiger softball returned to action on Tuesday, after a long hiatus due to the recent inclement weather.  The Tigers entered Tuesday looking to make moves in NCAC play, welcoming the Yeowomen of Oberlin College to Springfield. The Tigers took care of business in both ends of the double-header, 10-0 and 10-4. There was no shortage of offense or excitement for the Tigers on Tuesday, as the home team erupted for 20 runs on 27 hits, and 11 stolen bases in the double-header sweep. The sweep moves the Tigers to 19-4-1 on the year, with a 3-1 NCAC record.

GAME ONE NOTES

  • Abby Haab (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) stood tall on the mound in game one for the Tigers, dealing three innings of two-hit softball, while striking out four.
  • Courtney Lopez (Springfield, Ohio/Kenton Ridge) relieved Haab in game one, scattering four hits in her two innings of work for the red and white.
  • Wittenberg was led offensively by freshman catcher Rachel Black (Avon, Indiana/Avon) who exploded for four RBI's on three hits, including two doubles.
  • Also shining for the offense in the 10-0 shortened game was shortstop Loren Combs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) who not only chipped in two hits and an RBI, but also caused havoc on the base paths for the Yeowomen, swiping three bases in the game.
  • Five different Tigers produced multi-hit games in the NCAC victory, for 13 hits over the five inning drubbing.

GAME TWO NOTES

  • Katy Baumgartner (Fishers, Indiana/Cathedral) stepped up in a big way for the Tigers in game two, as the freshman silenced Oberlin's bats for five innings, surrendering only two hits and striking out a pair.
  • Combs also picked up where she left off in game one, slapping three more hits to add to her season total, while swiping another base to go along with two more RBI's.
  • Shannon Lance (Loveland, Ohio/Kings) and Casey Hobbs (Fairborn, Ohio/Carroll) produced three triples for the Tigers, as Lance recorded one three-bagger to go along with her three RBI's, while Hobbs recorded two triples and picked up two RBI's.

  • Wittenberg's offensive production also included nine extra-base hits, including four triples.
  • The Tigers were equally as efficient on the bases as they were at the plate, going 11-13 in stolen base attempts in the 12 innings played.
