GRANVILLE, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers kept pace with the leaders in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) after a doubleheader split at Denison.
After losing the opener 2-1, Wittenberg bounced back in a big way with an 8-0 victory. The results left the Tigers with records of 18-6 overall and 8-4 in the NCAC with doubleheaders remaining against league-leading DePauw on April 23 and Hiram on April 26. Wittenberg will enter the final week of the regular season in a tight, four-way battle for second place, two games behind DePauw.
The first game was a pitcher's duel won by the host Big Red. Senior Rachel Ross (Westerville, Ohio/South) took the loss despite allowing just two runs on eight hits and one walk. Offensively, the Tigers were limited to four hits, highlighted by a home run from freshman Abby Baker (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield).
Ross was just getting warmed up. She pitched all five innings of the nightcap, allowing just three hits and no runs while improving to 14-4 on the season. She now has 50 career pitching victories, one short of the Wittenberg record.
Offensively, Ross was a perfect 3-for-3, including a pair of doubles, two runs scored and two runs batted in. Sophomore Loren Combs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) added two hits and an RBI, freshman Casey Hobbs (Fairborn, Ohio/Carroll) went 2-for-2, a run and an RBI, and senior Kaitie Harrison (Springfield, Ohio/Kenton Ridge) drove in a pair of runs.
