Tigers Split Pair Against As Spring Break Trip Nears A Close

FORT MYERS, Fla. — As the Wittenberg softball team's annual Spring Break trip to sunny Florida winds to a close, the Tigers' bats continued to heat up against Dominican andPenn State-Behrend. Wittenberg split the pair, however, losing a tight 6-5 decision to Dominican before bouncing back to claim a 5-3 win over Penn State-Behrend.

The split, the Tigers' third of the week, put Wittenberg's record at 7-3 with one day of games remaining at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

In the first game, Wittenberg held a 5-2 lead through five innings before Dominican struck for a four-spot in the bottom of the sixth to secure the victory. The rally came against sophomore Rachel Ross (Westerville, Ohio/South), who allowed seven hits and four walks while striking out five before giving way to senior Anna Kvartunas (Springfield, Va./Paul VI Catholic), who recorded the final out of the sixth inning.

Offensively, the Tigers scratched out five hits in the game, but they still managed five runs, three of which were scored by sophomore Laura Rose (Riverside, Ohio/Stebbins). Senior Tori Amicon (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) drove in three runs.

In the nightcap, the Tigers turned the ball over to sophomore Kelby Kittles (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee), who scattered 10 hits and two walks in going the distance against Penn State-Behrend. She trailed Penn State-Behrend 2-0 through the first three innings before Wittenberg's offense got on track with three runs in the bottom of the third and two more in the sixth after Penn State-Behrend had tied the game in the fifth.

Rose had the biggest hit in the game, a two-run double in the sixth. She finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the game. Amicon drove in a pair, senior Fallon White (Fairborn, Ohio/Northmont) collected two hits and senior Katelyn Davis (Bethesda, Ohio/Union Local) scored twice.
