Tigers Endure Cold For Split With Case Western

Jessica Snyder

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The temperature was 31 degrees at gametime on Sunday, but the Wittenberg softball team braved the chill to split a doubleheader with Case Western Reserve University. The Tigers dropped the first game 5-2 but picked up the second 6-2, advancing to 4-11 on the season.

The Spartans went up two runs in the opener with one each in the second and third innings, then went on to add three in the top of the seventh before the Tigers countered with two in the bottom of the frame.

Freshman Caitlin Gowins (Coshocton, Ohio/River View) took the loss on seven hits, three earned runs and five strikeouts, walking just one batter.

Senior Jessi Allen (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) paced the lineup with a 2-for-3 day with one RBI and one stolen base. A double from junior Jessica Snyder (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) and singles from freshmen Laura Rose (Riverside, Ohio/Stebbins) and Shelby Ross (Springfield, Ohio/Kenton Ridge) made up the balance of Wittenberg's five hits in the game, while Rose also drew two walks.

The Tigers turned the tables in the late game, scoring one run in the first inning and mounting a five-run attack in the third. The Spartans responded with one run in the fourth and another in the fifth but could not make up the deficit.

Junior Tori Amicon (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) went 3-for-3 with three RBIs in the game, putting a run across in the first on a single and doubling home two in the third. Junior Katelyn Davis (Bethesda, Ohio/Union Local) pushed two across in the third with a single as part of a 1-for-3 day, and Rose provided one run with an RBI walk in the same frame.

Rose finished the game 1-for-2 at the plate. Snyder, Allen, freshman Rachel Ross (Westerville, Ohio/South) and junior Brooklyn Cox (Dayton, Ohio/Vandalia Butler) each hit safely once, rounding out the team's nine hits.

Rachel Ross occupied the circle and held the Spartans to two runs, both earned, on eight hits and one walk against four strikeouts. The victory moved her to 3-4 on the season.

Wittenberg hits the road for a Thursday afternoon doubleheader at Wilmington College at 3:30 p.m. on March 31.
