GRANVILLE, Ohio — The Wittenberg softball team played their way into the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament with some big games throughout the season, but the campaign ended Friday on the first day of the tournament with a 2-0 loss to first-seeded Denison and a 7-2 loss to Ohio Wesleyan.
The Tigers finish the 2011 season with a 13-24 overall record and a 7-7 record in the NCAC. The team gave host and defending champion Denison all it could handle behind another solid outing from freshman pitcher Rachel Ross (Westerville, Ohio/South).
Ross held the Big Red offense quiet until the sixth inning when they picked up their two runs, more than four off their season average of 5.6 runs per game. Error-less play in the field behind Ross limited Denison to four hits throughout the game.
The Tigers' lineup posted six hits, led by two each from junior Tori Amicon (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) and freshman Laura Rose (Riverside, Ohio/Stebbins) and rounded out by singles from senior Jessi Allen (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) and junior Katelyn Davis (Bethesda, Ohio/Union Local). Rose broke into double digits with her 10th double of the season.
Wittenberg touched the board first in the second game with a first-inning run when Allen scored on a wild pitch, but Ohio Wesleyan responded with the tying run in the bottom of the frame and two more in the second inning. Allen scored again in the sixth on an RBI single by junior Jessica Snyder (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) to make it a 3-2 ballgame, but the Bishops answered with four in the sixth to put it out of reach.
Allen scored twice after putting herself aboard with a 3-for-4 game at the plate to lead the Tigers, followed by 2-for-3 hitting from Snyder and a one hit for freshman Shelby Ross (Springfield, Ohio/Kenton Ridge).
Freshman Caitlin Gowins (Coshocton, Ohio/River View) took the loss in 5 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on 13 hits.
For her efforts, Allen was named to the All-Tournament team. She went 4-for-8 over the two games with two runs scored.
