Wittenberg Splits A Pair On Final Day Of Spring Break Trip

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Wittenberg Tigers put the finishing touches on their annual Spring Break trip with a split of two games at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, Fla. Wittenberg lost to seventh-ranked Washington University. 4-1, before ending the trip on a positive note with a 9-1 victory over Manhattanville.

The split gave the Tigers a 6-4 overall record. Two of Wittenberg's four losses came against top-10 ranked teams, another came against PAC favorite Misericordia and another came against NAIA scholarship program St. Francis.

Against Washington University, which is bidding for a fifth NCAA Division III Tournament berth since 2000, the Tigers hung tough behind solid pitching by freshman Alisha Degenhart and a defensive effort that stranded eight Bears runners. Degenhart allowed four runs on 10 hits and one walk in six innings. Offensively, the Tigers were stymied, however, as they scratched out two hits and one run on a groundout by junior Stephanie Zorn in the first inning.

Against Manhattanville, the Tiger bats finally awoke. The game was shortened to five innings due to the run rule as Rachael Hatcher won for the fourth time on the Spring Break trip and junior Lucy Huelsman, sophomore Sarah Fetters and Hatcher each drove in two runs. It was Wittenberg's third errorless game in the 10 played in Florida, and not coincidentally the Tigers have won all three of those.
