SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers came up tantalizingly short once again, fall to 0-5 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) following a 1-0 overtime loss to visiting Hiram.
It was Wittenberg's fourth one-goal loss in five NCAC games so far in 2014, and it dropped the Tigers to 5-8-1 overall on the season. Hiram improved to 7-6-2 overall and 2-2-2 in the league.
Neither team managed to dent the scoreboard in regulation, leading to a tense overtime session that ended in most improbable fashion. Hiram's Ryan Kamarz sent the ball in the direction of Wittenberg's goal and it caromed off a Tiger defender and across the line to account for the only score of the game at the 4:34 mark of the extra session.
Until that point, Wittenberg's defense had done a tremendous job. A host of players took their turns protecting the Tigers' goal, limiting Hiram to just eight shots in the game and senior goalkeeper James Van Artsdalen (Riverwoods, Ill./Deerfield) to just two saves.
The game was extremely physical, with a total of nine yellow cards handed out. Hiram's Quinn Galecki earned two yellow cards and was sent off the pitch at the 79:25 mark, meaning that the Terriers earned the victory while playing a man down.
Offensively, Wittenberg attempted 10 shots in the game, led by two each from freshman Alexandre Veuthey (Geneva, Switzerland) and sophomore Tucker Stas (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley).
