Wittenberg goes five-under-par in second round to overcome first round deficit and take 15-stroke lead into NCAC Championship Series #2.
STREETSBORO, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers rallied for a 15-stroke victory at the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Championship Series #1.
Wittenberg trailed Allegheny by eight strokes after the first round, but the Tigers responded with a five-under-par round of 283 on Day 2 to race past the Gators and into first place with a total of 579. All five Wittenberg players finished with a 75 or better in the second round at Boulder Creek Golf Club, which was playing par-72, 6,971 yards.
The scores from the NCAC Championship Series #1 carry over to the NCAC Championship #2, scheduled for April 30-May 1 at Wooster Country Club. Wittenberg is the six-time defending NCAC champion, and the Tigers are the heavy favorite to repeat.
The Tigers 45-player field was paced by senior Sam Geise (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro), who earned medalist honors with rounds of 72 and 69 to finish with a three-under-par total of 141. That score was one better than Allegheny's Jimmy Lasher, the only other player in the field to finish under par.
Wittenberg's next finisher was junior Mark David Wright (Westerville, Ohio/Tree of Life), who carded matching rounds of 73 for a total of 146 and a tie for third place with Allegheny's Robby Pickett. Junior Garrett Brickley (Pickerington, Ohio/North), freshman Isaac Hartley (Bellevue, Ohio/Bellevue) and freshman Colin Laszlo (Waipahu, Hawaii/Punahou), all of whom posted a two-round total of 149 to finish in a tie for fifth place.
