Wittenberg University Loses Friend, Team "Mom," Nancy Maurer

Posted by: Ryan Maurer

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — Behind every great man is a great woman, or so the old saying goes. Many former Wittenberg student-athletes would most certainly agree, making the passing of Nancy Maurer on Friday, Feb. 25, a true community loss.

Nancy, the wife of legendary Wittenberg coach and administrator Dave Maurer, was 73 years of age upon her death Friday at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Dave, the winningest football coach in Wittenberg history and a member of the National College Football Hall of Fame. They have three children and four grandchildren.

A memorial service for a woman known as "Team Mom" and "Coach of the Parents" by many student-athletes and their families in the 1960s, 70s and 80s will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Springfield. A private bural will be held at the convenience of the family, with Littleton & Rue Funeral Home handling all of the arrangements. Expressions of sympathy can be conveyed to the family via the funeral home's Web site.
