Born and raised in Springfield and a 2012 graduate of Bowling Green State University with a bachelor's degree in athletic training, Bumgarner spent two years at Morehead State University working with the football and baseball teams.

Bumgarner next joined the sports medicine staff at Marshall University from 2015-2018 where he worked primarily with the baseball team. After that, Bumgarner took a position with the Pittsburgh Pirates Rookie League team in Bradenton, Florida. In 2019, he moved back to Ohio to work at Orthopedic One for Dr. Mark Triffon and then Beacon Orthopedics for Dr. Andrew Razzano. Bumgarner was hired by Mercy Health Systems in April 2023, and his primary assignment is serving the student-athletes at Wittenberg University. He is assigned to primarily cover football, softball, men’s volleyball, and men's and women's tennis.
