CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. - The Wittenberg Tigers couldn't have sought out a much greater challenge to open the 2015 season than a road trip to eighth-ranked Thomas More, which is coming off a program-best 23-2 season a year ago. The Tigers turned in a solid showing, however, dropping a 2-0 decision in the lid-lifter for both teams.
A year ago, Thomas More handed Wittenberg a 6-1 loss in the 2014 season opener in Springfield. This time around, the Tigers kept the game in check throughout, despite a 15-2 advantage in shots for the Saints.
The Saints opened the scoring in the 25th minute and then put the game out of reach with a goal in the 84th. Wittenberg's offensive output - at least from a statistical vantage point - consisted of shots from freshman Shannon Brueck (Loveland, Ohio/Milford) and sophomore Nicole Karavakis (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Pickerington Central).
Defensively, the Tigers picked up three saves in goal from sophomore Alexa Murrietta (Las Vegas, Nev./Shadow Ridge).
Wittenberg returns to Springfield to open the home portion of the 2015 schedule against Pitt-Bradford at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4.
