Second Half Goal Flurry Sends Tigers To A Win

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Tigers struck seven minutes into each half as they controlled their final home regular season match against Earlham, winning by a 3-1 margin.

Sophomore defender Maggie Amorello (Sutton, Mass./Worcester Academy) got the Tigers on the board after a pinpoint Suzanne Medwid (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) free kick found the defender wide open atop the six-yard box. Amorello's header gave the Tigers the early advantage and they never looked back.

Holding their 1-0 edge into the intermission, the Tigers, like they have so many times this season, played their better half of soccer in the second stanza. A sequence of pressure gave Wittenberg a free kick from outside the penalty area, and after a nice pass from junior midfielder Rachael Radel (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview), it was junior Emily Murray (Petoskey, Mich./Petoskey) who doubled the Tigers advantage by slotting home a left-footed shot.

Moments later, the Quakers stole some momentum by earning a penalty kick, which they converted. However, no sooner had the newest tally been put on the scoreboard than senior forward Corey Shubitowski (Columbus, Ohio/Watterson) restored the Tigers' advantage when she struck a hard shot under the crossbar from 30 yards away in the 54th minute.

The Tigers outshot the Quakers 18-2 on the contest, while outcornering the visitors, 8-1. The win moves Wittenberg into double-digits in the victory column while moving one step closer to assuring themselves a spot in the NCAC tournament. They can lock up a spot this Saturday, Oct. 25 when they travel to Meadville, Pa., to take on the Allegheny Gators for an 11 a.m. opening kickoff.
